- Black Saturday? A day of infamy? It's hard, very hard, for me to write objectively right now, but here is a summary of what we heard on BASH 123. If you missed it...we will have it on demand in a few minutes.

In regards to MW2 - click to read more .
Evidently IW and Activision just decided to give the finger to every Clan playing in the COD Franchise that made them what they are today. The announcement this weekend regarding the complete lack of Dedicated Server ability in their upcoming MW2 title is so astoundingly stupid one has to wonder if they are even cognizant of their folly. If not, then this is all the worse. IF so, then they are simply going to have to lose sales before they realize that you cannot piss off a generation of gamers in favor of 13 y/o "buy this for me mommy" kids. Adults and most Clans in general go out and pay money to get a game that they can have some longevity out of. This is a wise purchase. Adults and Clans in general want a game that can support their continued online activity that ranges from communal interest, removal of the child element from our online "homes" and the competitive play that is expected in the PC FPS world. These console "buy me a game so next week I can beg for something new children" may infact be in the majority in the console FPS market - however - they certainly are not who you should be marketing to if you want continued purchase of a franchise product to translate into sales down the road on the PC.
What I mean is IW and Activision have traded the competitive market, the Clan community and all that goes along with that (which includes MOD communities etc) for the ability to be lazy and port their pussied up version of a game to a PC market that usually, and probably always will demand more bang for their buck then a just another SP game. They traded brand loyalty of a good portion of their market for the ability to pander to console gamers who on average are fickle creatures anyway. Can we say "Impulse sales" boys and girls? In the short, they traded a franchise name for a quick buck, without realizing that some of that buck they thought they would get isn't going to be coming in this time. I personally hope it hits them hard to. Not making PC games that are dumbed down for the kiddies is preferable to making games that suck outright and waste the real Gamers money. We won't even begin to discuss the decision to dump PB and go to VAC (which rules out TWL clan matches for those not thinking that far ahead here) Hope your happy IW - your Christmas blockbuster just got relegated to the bargain bin come year end. Way to go.
Also to be mentioned: this clan, its 17 members, however small that is in practice: will not as a Clan support this BS ported console child oriented game. We will also recommend to our 200+ community members that they not patronize the ignorant dumbasses who decided this was a "good idea"...
Good idea: Franchise loyalty, competitive gaming platforms on the PC and continued sales in the long run Bad idea: Pissing off a shit load of gamers, who on the whole are unforgiving of mistakes in return for... well, not much. Sign the petition to let IW know what you think as well people. May not do much good - but at least it can let them get some initial figures of how much money they just lost. Also, as of right now MW2 has been slammed down to Sims3 level and NancyDrew (I know we all anticipate that game) over at Amazon. This happend this morning because of all the cancellation orders. Wow, number 1 to NancyDrew in a matter of hours. Someone in the sales division over at IW has some major damage control to do. -------- Other Links concerning this: GameSpy IGN GamesIndustry |
